One problem I have with Lester Brown's argument is his linear approach to the problem. He extrapolates his dire numbers based on the erroneous assumption that ethanol manufacturers will continue to use grain as their primary ingredient in ethanol production as the price for grain continues to rise. We seem to forget the the primary motivation for producing ethanol is to make money. Even considering the subsidies that are available for investing in ethanol production there is stil a price point at which producing ethanol at a profit will be affected by the escalating price of corn. As the infrastructure grows for the distribution of alcohol fuels and more vehicles are designed to use this fuel the incentive for finding cheaper alternatives will steer the industry towards other alternative materilas such as wood chips or switchgrass.

He also seems to ignore the fact that a major percentage of corn grown in the U.S. is used to produce high-fructose corn syrup used in the production of soft drinks, refined foods and candies. If we are going to get into a discussion about what segment of the grain market should be curtailed in order to make sure food is available for starving people my vote would be to eliminate soft drinks and processed junk foods and use that corn are for ethanol production!

I think the art is very interesting and the concept is cool to relate numbers to art. I have seen images done for real using cans or stamps or other items. This is really computer generated stuff but nice. I question the accuracy of the statistics though. We have just over 2 million people in prison today so I fail to see how we could have 2.3 million incarcerated in 2005 alone. Everyone in prison in the US today was sent there in 2005...I doubt it. This just makes me question the accuracy of the other stats as well.

Rocky Anderson, speaker at 2006 Pie & Politics is very involved with ICLEI -- and I know that a number of the folks on the AFS had reserched the website. This does seem like something that could / should be brought into the Green Teams. And perhaps the muncipalities in the region could join on a collective basis. A great resource. Folks should take the time to check out the website at http://www.iclei.org/.

It may be safer to use these bulbs, even though they contain mercury. Read the CFL Fact Sheet here by the US epa.

Since this posting, this business was profiled on TV--positiviely. Also, I emailed asking them if I should use their inks when printing art quality prints on an Epson printer. In this case, they suggested sticking with the mfg. ink. I also asked if I could send them my empty cartridges and the answer was yes.
